President's Message April 2008

President's Message April 2008

I am always amazed by no matter how long I am in this business or how far along I am in my career, by the little gems of knowledge I pick up, just by being at ASMP meetings. Last Wednesday evening many of those gems were offered by Seth Resnick (founder of D-65 workshops) who gave us a great presentation of both his personal images and working techniques.

I know what most of you are thinking; I've have seen it all! What could be new out there?
Well think of this….when most of us started out, one camera and three lenses got you through most assignments for years. Today, forget about the ever-changing world of digital cameras, let's look at the constantly evolving world of programs and their workflows.
Personally, if had I stayed comfortably in my office over the last two years, today I would be like the mountain man who came to town trying to figure out what writing is all about without even knowing an alphabet existed!

I feel this is very worthy cause to support and our opportunity to give something back to the community and show who we are and what we can stand for as professionals. It is their hope that his year when we are called on, we will respond with open hearts and help put back into the universe a small portion of what most of us have received. To that end they offer this gathering to thank us for our past and future participation. It is good time to meet them and put a face on ASMP.

The Passing of a friend and Colleague

Dear Friends,

We received sad news that on Sunday, July 22nd , "ASMP Life Member" and dear friend Bob Gelberg passed away. He was a founding member of the South Florida ASMP Chapter. Bob was a mentor to me and to many of my generation, and to inexperienced newcomers in the “business” of photography, he taught by shining example. He will be missed by all who had the good fortune to have known him.

The family has asked us to notify his colleagues in the photo community and invite whoever would like to attend.

The service for Bob will be at:

11am, Tuesday, July 24th at the Mount Nebo Levitt-Weinstein Chapel located at 5900 SW 77th Avenue. A celebration of his life will follow after the service at 1:00 pm at the home of his daughter Joanne Gelberg Justiz, 7331 SW 117 Terr, 305-238-5409

Call for Entries...."AD OCULUS" ..fine art photo show

"AD OCULUS" - Latin: "with your own eyes", "obvious upon sight"
ASMP South Florida is presenting a Member's Only Fine-Art photographic show at the Gardens Memorial Park, located in Boca Raton. The exhibit is scheduled to open August 23, 2007, and will run for 3 months. The Gallery at the Gardens is non-profit, but any print sales would require a 10 percent donation to the American Cancer Society. Any and all members in good standing are invited to participate.

Black Book Party

Hello All,

Last week was an incredilble week for Fine Art Photography. From "The Business of Fine Art Photography" at the Miami Ad School to "Finding your Audience" by Mary Virginia Swanson and the SPE event at the Radison, we were swamped with both inspiration and education. It was a real eye opener to an area for those of us who don't "seem to get it"
I now look at those $50,000 to $2,000,000 prints from a different perspective and now begin to understand. Needless to say, I am sure most of those who had the chance to attend are revamping their work. I know I am.
Debra Weiss, from AdBase also offered an interesting evening from a commercial side of things that only added to all the events that will change, (my course) this coming year.
