ASMP’s “Return on Membership” Winners

$17,000 worth of prizes!

We are pleased to announce the winners in each of the four categories below.

#1 Category: ‘Wide Angle’ — Open to All Members

This category asked you to name the biggest non-monetary benefit for being an ASMP member.

First prize winner: Kate Mackley — Dallas Chapter

In 2007, I was hired to be the photo editor of an online neighborhood news site, and I literally had no idea of how to do the job. I was a good photographer, but I didn’t understand many aspects of the business requirements of a professional editor. I joined ASMP at the urging of Hillsman Jackson, now the president of the Dallas chapter. Since then, using ASMP resources, I’ve found software for my business; I’ve used the sample releases and contracts on the website, I properly charge and file state sales taxes, and appropriately — though not always successfully! — negotiate and estimate my services. I, or a photographer that works for me, attend every educational seminar our chapter has offered.

The most important benefit of ASMP membership is that I’ve become an advocate for photographers’ rights within my company. I’ve steered my employer away from work-for-hire contracts for the photographers we hire and advocate that they retain copyright to their work. We employ mainly new photographers, who aren’t yet trained in proper DAM workflow: appropriate use of metadata, proper archiving, and copyright. Without the framework of ASMP, I would have been doing my job in the dark, and the photographers would have lost the rights to their work. Thanks to the Dallas chapter, the ASMP website, the invaluable Professional Business Practices in Photography handbook, and the Emerging Photographers forum, I have a better understanding of my position as a businessperson, an editor and a photographer’s advocate.

Second prize winner: David Zentz — Los Angeles Chapter

Before joining the ASMP I was in the dark. I had just tendered my resignation as a staff photographer at a mid-sized, central Illinois newspaper. Buyouts and layoffs were happening everywhere, but that wasn’t so scary. I was young and unattached. But what about the future, with a mortgage, wife and children? Did I want to constantly look over my shoulder? I decided I wanted some control of my career and gave two weeks’ notice. Now what?

That’s when I heard Strictly Business 2 was coming to Chicago. A photographer friend said this seminar gave him a priceless education and insisted I go. So I registered. He was right. SB2 illuminated for me many of the business practices that I was conveniently oblivious to as a staff photographer. It taught me invaluable lessons on self-promotion, contracts, copyright and more. On the final day I joined as a general member.

One year ago, I moved to Los Angeles and quickly aligned with the local ASMP chapter. Membership has been invaluable as I work to build contacts and use ASMP business practices to grow my business in a sound and responsible way.

Starting over in a new town is difficult. Combined with my superb timing for relocating during the worst economy in decades has made for a long year. But things are picking up and I’m beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel. The light would surely not be so bright without the ASMP guiding my way.

#2 Category: ‘Focus’ — Open to All Members

For this category, you were asked to tell how valuable Find a Photographer has been to you. ASMP regularly promotes FAP to thousands of art buyers nationwide and now has an exciting iPhone app that puts FAP at the buyers' fingertips — literally! What has FAP done for you in the past — has it generated business, connected you with a new network, opened new doors? Tell us and others about it in 250 words or less, and here are the prize packages for first or second place.

First prize winner: Mary Lou Uttermohlen — New Orleans/Gulf South Chapter

I rejoined ASMP in 2005 for two reasons: There was a seminar I wanted to attend and I wanted to advertise in “Find A Photographer.” The money I saved attending the seminar as a member covered most of the cost of annual dues. It was a great deal.

Soon after joining Katrina hit here in New Orleans. I was pregnant and moving into another house while dealing with a local economy hard hit from the storm. Marketing seemed like an overwhelming task. Just making groceries was an accomplishment. The stores were not open for long and there were not enough employees to keep the shelves stocked. In addition to cleaning up the mess the storm made and dealing with inconveniences, we all knew we had to get back to work in order to survive.

Thanks to ASMP the phone never stopped ringing without me even lifting a finger. New clients found me through “Find A Photographer” on the ASMP website. They were able to quickly look at work samples and decide whether or not to look at my webpage.

I had national clients prior to the storm but I also depended on the local market to carry me through. Since the storm it has been the opposite. I depend on the out of town clients primarily. I am very grateful for ASMP’s “Find A Photographer.” It has been a huge asset in hooking me up with clients. In my opinion, this feature alone makes membership worth the price!

Second prize winner: James Aronovsky — San Diego Chapter

The ASMP Find a Photographer feature has become my single greatest marketing tool. I belong to other professional organizations with photographer locators, but ASMP’s FAP has consistently provided me the highest of what those accounting types call “positive return on investment.”

I didn’t originally join ASMP expecting a direct financial return. I supported ASMP’s philosophy of protecting and promoting photographers’ interests. I was also in need of marketing and business education and advice. I received that, of course.

When FAP became active, I started to receive calls from clients I could never have found on my own. Art directors at corporations and publications have told me over and over that ASMP is their trusted resource for finding photographers. Many say they wouldn’t bother to look anywhere else. Sometimes, they’ll get my geographic region confused, and I’m happy to point them to other ASMP chapter rosters, knowing the same will be done for me.

When a fellow ASMP member calls, it is often to have me create a specific local photograph for a larger project where their client either doesn’t have the budget, or the photographer doesn’t want to travel. Speaking the same language, and knowing we’ll have similar business terms, this has allowed me to claim new assignments without any additional marketing or effort.

Find a Photographer has clearly improved my bottom line. My ASMP dues are not just a tax deduction, but have proven to be a smart investment for my business.

#3 Category: ‘Meter’ — Open to All Members

How has ASMP benefited you in the wallet? Or, to put it another way, tell us how ASMP has helped you save money. With so many member discounts, you could literally save hundreds or even thousands of dollars just by taking advantage of what ASMP offers. Don't forget about the regular savings on things like AT&T and insurance. You may be surprised when you start adding it all together how much you're saving.

First prize winner: Timothy Park — Oregon Chapter

ASMP has saved me MONEY! Their association with Livebooks saved me over $2000 on two new websites. Without ASMP, I would not have known about a 50% off deal, nor would I have gotten the 30% ASMP discount on my second site! I have saved on the last two versions of Cradoc Fotoquote software, and saved upgrading to Photoshop CS4. Being an ASMP member means that I have access to some of the best photographers in the world through education and personal contact. Knowing that someone has a kind word of encouragement for me as I build my business is priceless. Finally, being educated about the value of my images and the larger marketplace gives me confidence to pursue this career without fear.

Second prize winner: Jeff Fitlow — Houston Chapter

I am a University photographer so my budget is very limited to what funnels through my department. Through my ASMP membership I have been able to save money and get much more for my money. We have used our discount from B&H over and over again for equipment. I save money every month on my cell phone and was able to make the iphone fit into the budget. Being able to shop member software sites gets me low enough pricing that so that I am able to purchase the current software when I need it. A few years back I was given a workshop budget. I wanted to go to Santa Fe to see Jay Maisel. I could not make it work financially. Using discounts on air fare and a rental car I was able to cut costs enough to attend. One of the best weeks of my life.

#4 Category: ‘Exposure’ — Open to Student Members Only

For this category, we asked our student members, "What benefits has your ASMP membership brought you?" Have we helped you tackle the business side of photography? Are you more creative in your work? Is ASMP an important professional credential? The judges will bestow the prizes below on the best of hte best entries.

First prize winner: Randolph Sauer — Ohio Valley Chapter

My relationship with ASMP has been an invaluable asset as I’ve grown as a photographer, a businessman, and an artist. Even before I joined I was greeted at monthly meetings with open arms, as Ohio Valley photographers shared their latest projects, discoveries, and inspirations. There was no question I couldn’t ask, and believe me I had quite a few. I still do, and I must say I visit asmp.org about once a week now, carefully studying the ‘Strictly Business Blog’ and the wealth of educational videos they’ve made available. My current license and invoicing system owes a huge dept to the direction ASMP’s Licensing Guide provides, and I feel safe in the knowledge that my images are safely protected by expert legal texts. The book I received upon joining, ‘Professional Business Practices in Photography’ is a veritable bible for this industry, and I find myself referring to it again and again. All of these elements have been incredibly important for my professional growth, and I haven’t even scratched the surface of everything the ASMP offers its members. Perhaps the single greatest element is that you have a lifeline within ASMP. There will be someone you can call among your fellow members who will understand exactly what you are going through, and provide expert advice to help you succeed.

Second prize winner: Jonathan Sosnowski — New Jersey Chapter

I am a college student majoring in photography. If you have priced out the cost of paper lately, you know how closely I have to watch every penny I spend. Every expenditure I make feels monumental to me, but something told me that this would be a very smart $60 investment. And so I joined. Shortly after I did so, I was approached to shoot a family friend’s Bar Mitzvah. As a novice, I was insecure about what I should charge given my limited experience, and nervous about insisting on the ownership of the photographs I was being hired to take. As I was preparing my proposal for the event, I received an email from the ASMP asking me to add my signature to the letter that CopyAlliance intends to send to President Obama. I took a break to read it.

Reading that letter empowered me. I really felt, for the first time, that I was part of a community, and that my work — even at this stage of my education and career — had value. I realized then, with the help of ASMP, that I owed it to myself to begin my career with professional values and standards. When I joined ASMP, I am not sure what I was expecting. But what I got was an organization that is interested in protecting me and all its other members. ASMP helped me understand this important lesson and I will carry that with me throughout my entire career.
