President's Message April 2008

President's Message April 2008

I am always amazed by no matter how long I am in this business or how far along I am in my career, by the little gems of knowledge I pick up, just by being at ASMP meetings. Last Wednesday evening many of those gems were offered by Seth Resnick (founder of D-65 workshops) who gave us a great presentation of both his personal images and working techniques.

I know what most of you are thinking; I've have seen it all! What could be new out there?
Well think of this….when most of us started out, one camera and three lenses got you through most assignments for years. Today, forget about the ever-changing world of digital cameras, let's look at the constantly evolving world of programs and their workflows.
Personally, if had I stayed comfortably in my office over the last two years, today I would be like the mountain man who came to town trying to figure out what writing is all about without even knowing an alphabet existed!

Within the first 20 minutes, Seth opened my eyes to a color management technique in the workflow that made so much sense, I implemented it the very next day when a client called to crunch me with one of those “ Say what?????!!!!” impossible deadlines where I had to deal with an outside printing service whose final result I would not be able to see before the delivery overseas for which I would be responsible for. Result….right on target and I became the hero. For that gem of info and many others plus a healthy dose of inspiration, thank you Seth.

We would also like to thank Louis Jay for the welcome donation of his beautiful studio, Studio 27, for the evenings event. We hope all members will remember his generosity next time you need a rental studio. Studio 27, 27 NE 27th St, Miami 305 573-3311

Here at ASMP, we the board strive and work hard to bring meetings that inspire, educate and sometimes just bring us all together. I have never attended any that I can say; I got nothing out of that. Just socializing alone brings new and old friends together in what is normally a solo sport, being a photographer. Taking advantage of these meetings and making the time needed to attend is part of being an involved photographer who is in reality investing in himself to further his career by gaining the knowledge of what and how it is happening in this era.

We are creating a whole new promo campaign for our membership. It is already started on myspace.com , In May we will continue ( INFO TO COME) in our effort to draw attention to our chapter by creating a separate web showing of our work via a new Chapter Archive and producing individual video spots highlighting our members all with links to their websites. It is where and what is happening today and I urge you all to stay tuned and get involved.

I would like to welcome our new members and thank them for becoming involved. It is my belief that younger eyes see newer things and from what I have seen of their work, we have much to gain from their presence in our community.

See you in May.
