Parting Shot

The Powerful Work and Wit of Alan Farkas

Alan Farkas charmed everyone he met with his wicked sense of humor and dry wit. A founding member and past president of the ASMP’s Western New York chapter, his dedication to the industry extended from his own photography business, to promoting good business practices and teaching at RIT, to a staff position at Eastman Kodak.

Newly independent as a freelance shooter after shedding his corporate life, Farkas and his wife and business partner, Wendi, were midway through building a new portfolio when his career was cut tragically short by cancer. A testament to the strength of his work and relationships is the fact that his business phones continued to ring with potential job offers for several months after his passing.

During August 2009 the chapter organized I Remember Alan, a group exhibition and tribute to benefit a college fund for Farkas’s four-year-old daughter Lara. Booksmart Studios graciously provided exhibition space and printed Farkas’s images for the show at cost, and Lumiere Photo handled the framing. Three weeks in advance of the opening, while a large piece was setting out to dry, an admiring visitor purchased it on the spot for $2,000, getting the fund off to a great start. For those unable to attend the exhibit, a gallery of Farkas’s images can be viewed here.
