ASMP's Cavanaugh Receives IPC Photographer Leadership Award

Philadelphia, PA...The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) has announced that Jim Cavanaugh, a Buffalo-based architectural and aerial photographer, has received the 2012 International Photographic Council (IPC) Professional Photographer Leadership Award. He was selected by the association as the member who best represents the group's criteria and ideals, and is one of six winners being recognized by professional photography organizations at the IPC's 14th annual Pro Award Luncheon held at the United Nations on May 17th.


According to ASMP Executive Director Eugene Mopsik, "Jim's achievements include his involvement in copyright education around the country, his exploration of new business models, and his willingness to share insights and strategies as part of his effort to improve the position of working imaging professionals."


Jim focuses his creative efforts on architectural, interior and aerial photography and video & multi-media presentations. He is recognized as a leading specialist in these areas and his images have been seen in numerous publications. Jim has been an active member of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) as President, Treasurer, Chairman of ASMP's Copyright Committee and Chairman of the Business Practices Committee of ASMP/Architecture. He is a two time Past President of the Western New York Chapter of ASMP. He currently provides copyright seminars to ASMP Chapters around the country.


He is also a former director of The Media Photographers Copyright Agency and is an Allied Member of the Buffalo/WNY Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. He is a strong advocate of copyright issues and ethical business practices in photography. In addition to photography, Jim is a licensed pilot with instrument ratings.


The Leadership Awards are presented each May, which is International Professional Photographer Month, by the IPC, a non-governmental organization (NGO) of the United Nations dedicated to increasing worldwide recognition of photography as a universal means of communication. This year, for the first time, editors-in-chief from Japan and Pakistan will be present to receive IPC Distinguished Service Awards: Michiko Ouchi, Pen News Weekly, of Japan; and Muzammil Izhar Siddiqui, Foto Line Monthly, of Pakistan.


In addition to ASMP, seven other associations have designated honorees for 2012: American Photographic Artists (APA), Federation of European Photographers (FEP), National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), Professional Photographers of American (PPA), Professional School Photographers Association (PSPA), White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA), and Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI).
