How long have you been working professionally?

3 years

What has been your favorite photographic assignment or project to date?

My first foreign assignment took me to the Bolivian Andes during one of the country’s many political upheavals. The quality of light and the kindness and generosity of the people I met and photographed made it an incredibly special trip for me.

What has been your most challenging photographic assignment or project to date?

Covering the immediate fallout of the summer war between Israel and Hezbollah got me thinking about the importance of lending a sense of contextual and historical place to pictures. I’m now working on a series of evidence-based street photos that attempt to capture the imposing weight of history on everyday life in a country scarred by 15 years of civil war. The challenge is to capture the banality of terror years after the fact and still get people to look.

Please describe any special photographic projects or assignments in which you are currently engaged.

I’m currently developing a feature documentary film about carrier pigeons that relay messages between refugee camps.

What is your greatest photographic aspiration?

To be as excited about photography at the age of 75 as my grandfather was about painting.

What is your primary source of news about the photography industry?

I read PDNonline from time to time, but mostly get my news from colleagues and the amazing Lightstalkers Web site — a great place to butt heads and occasionally talk about the Big Questions we all face in our jobs.

In your opinion, what is the most critical issue affecting photographers today?

Diminishing editorial budgets are making it more and more difficult to cover stories that fall outside the regular, established beats of most media outlets.

What do you consider to be the most valuable aspect of your Merit Membership in the ASMP?

Access to a wealth of information from other photographers who know way more than I do.

Is there any particular resource or information that you would like to see ASMP implement as an added service to the members?

Subsidized or discounted Hostile Environment Training (from Centurion, for example) would be an excellent addition to the ASMP’s support system for freelancers. Such courses are expensive but totally necessary for certain types of reporting, especially as risks to journalists continue to increase.
