A big loss and a great celebration in South Florida

Dear South Florida Members:
The Board regrets to inform about the death of photographer and educator Darryl Strawser, Chief of the Photography Department of the Miami Ad School (MAS) for several years.
Darry has been an influential educator in the local visual arts community, and several MAS students owe their high level of photographic skills to this humble yet powerful man.
Darryl left us in the final days of December, and thanks to the endless work of our Membership Chair, Sandy Levy, the Chapter was able to obtain from National, the authorization to create a Merit Membership Award with Darryl’s name, so one bright student from the MAS, selected by voting, will receive one year, free ASMP Associate Member status, when receiving the “Darryl Strawser Merit Membership Award”, and this way, we can honor Darryl’s name for years to come.
Sandy also managed to obtain two Plaques, one that will be permanently mounted on the premises of the Miami Ad School and another for the student who will receive the award each year.
When the Miami Ad School was preparing a Memorial for Darryl, his family called and said they would rather have a Celebration, some joyful event and so it was agreed: This coming Saturday, January the 28th, at 6PM at the Miami Ad School, we will celebrate the name and memory of Darryl and the SFL Board will be there to give the first Merit Membership Award to one student.
The ASMP SFL members are invited to attend this event, which should strengthen the ties between ASMP and MAS, as relevant organizations in the SFL visual community, and pay homage to this great human being.
“Education is a pathway to immortality”
LONG LIVE DARRYL!!
