Everything is Energy

Project Essay:

Lately I have found myself reverting back to my childhood habits of tromping around in the woods quite often, perhaps as a means of escape from the overwhelmingly technological society I am being thrust into. In this process, I am discovering immense truth to Thoreau’s words, “Life consists with wildness. The most alive is the wildest.” Every living thing has an organic, potentially visual energy that is truly tangible when one seeks to grasp it. I think that this natural energy manifests not only in the wild, but also in our communities.

Through observation of festival settings and community events, I have noticed a phenomenon, which I like to call a “contact high” that occurs when surrounding oneself with others who exude an inexplicable exhilaration and emotional energy. I chose to investigate that natural, social energy and those contagiously spirited atmospheres, which tend to transmit energy to those around it.

It is this tangible infectious attitude that I seek to encapsulate visually through my images. As these special instances cannot be fabricated or recreated, the most appropriate way for me to capture such rare minutiae was to place myself in the aforementioned environments and exist as both a creature of observation and as an active participant. These seemingly little moments of exchanged energy are represented through my “abstract-documentary” style of photography and the tactile medium of 35mm analog film. My passion for photography was ignited by the genuine beauty of analog, and I believe the use of film in this process is an essential, elegant ingredient to capturing the organic energy I am so intrigued by. I see this enigmatic form of energy as one of the most beautiful examples of unspoken human communication. In a technologic society where emphasis on in-person contact is dwindling, I believe it is essential to convey the splendor of community interaction.
